What do I need to bring?
Just an apron. All tools, equipment, ingredients and a comprehensive printed recipe & method will be supplied. A camera (no videoing), paper and pen or electronic device for notes you wish to remember are optional.
Where are the classes held?
Unless otherwise noted, all regular classes are held in our unique home kitchen in Morphett Vale, South Australia (full address supplied upon registration).
You will find us just over half-an-hour from the Adelaide CBD, near the southern expressway.
We also teach occasional classes in Tanunda, the Barossa Valley, and the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. This will be clearly noted on the individual classes where applicable.
Are the classes appropriate for people who haven’t done much/any baking?
Absolutely. The classes attract home bakers and cooks with a range of experiences (lots or none) in baking and cooking. The goal of the classes is for everyone to improve their baking, whether just beginning or baking regularly.
"Continuing" or "Advanced" classes will always require a completed prerequisite "Introduction" class.
Are the classes hands-on or a demonstration?
Our current classes are all hands-on classes. The goal of each class is to maximize the experience and learning. Some elements may be demonstrated or prepared in advance for practicality (e.g. mixing the sourdough starter or a large batch of sugar syrup for bun glaze).
Please feel free to contact us for further information or clarification about specific classes.
Will I be able to replicate the recipe at home?
That is the goal of all classes. Recipes and instructions are designed to help you achieve a great result at home. We design the methods to suit already accessible ingredients and equipment (or can recommend affordable options where needed).
Will I take home baked goods after the class?
Absolutely! Enjoying food is an important part of baking. Every class has something to take home - often lots of somethings! Please contact us if you would like to clarify a specific class.
Who will be teaching me?
All classes are taught by founder and baker, Matthew Thorpe. Matthew has extensive experience as both a home baker and professional baker. Students praise Matthew's patient, friendly, clear and expert teaching. Please see our About Us page for more information.
Do you do special group or individual classes?
Sure can. Past special classes include one on one, customised day, corporate groups, and small groups. Matthew has been booked for a special class on the Yorke Peninsula, and as far as the snow fields in Victoria, Australia! Please make contact to discuss your needs further.
Is consulting available?
Yes. Matthew offers consulting for bakeries, micro-bakeries, restaurants, and anyone wanting to develop breads in their business - large or small. He has a wide range of experience and training to suit many settings. Please contact us for further discussion about your needs and pricing.
Do you offer gift vouchers for purchase?
We do. Please see our Gift Vouchers page for more information.
What’s your most popular class or specialty?
Sourdough bread (wild yeast/levain/naturally leavened) is our most popular class and our specialty.
If you want to learn to make healthy, delicious sourdough bread at home, here in Adelaide or South Australia or Australia, our Sourdough Bread Intro class is the perfect class for you. It’s a small class size that is completely hands-on, comprehensive, intimate and lots of fun.
I want to learn to make organic sourdough or yeast bread - will your classes help?
Absolutely. All of the recipes are easily adaptable for organic flours and grains. Please mention during the class your desire to use organic flour at home for extra guidance or suggestions for sources.
What are the kitchen facilities for classes?
All small tools, equipment, and ingredients (everything you’ll need!) for use in the class are supplied. Facilities vary depending on the location. Check out our social media for some photos.
Can I bring my camera and take photos of the class?
Sure. Photos are allowed and encouraged.
Please note: no videoing of the class is permitted. Please use discretion and consider other participants’ privacy when taking photographs.
What should I wear?
Comfortable casual clothing, appropriate for a kitchen environment and comfortable, closed-toe shoes (no high heels). Long hair should be tied back neatly for safety.
May I bring a friend or children?
No - only registered participants may attend. There is no waiting area for friends or drivers. We recommend finding a comfortable local cafe or park as required.
Are your classes open for children?
Unfortunately currently classes are not open for children. With our approval, responsible teenagers may be permitted with an accompanying, registered adult. Please contact us to clarify your situation.
